Monte Walsh plot

"Monte Walsh is what the West was all about."

Monte Walsh is an older cowboy for whom the end of the Wild West is in sight. He can go work for the railroad with friends, but what he really wants is to stay on the open prairie. In the end, they all have to choose a whole new life, which is not as easy as it seems.

Palance and Marvin and the story make this a true western feast with, as Brix already mentioned, a lump in the throat because of the nostalgia and melancholy, with which the film is heavily pregnant.

I don't remember the remake clearly anymore, but the original is certainly not inferior.

There are more Westerns about the end of this era, often very worthwhile. This film deserves to be added to the top of that list.

A beautiful, very compelling story, not least because of Marvin's fantastic acting.

Statue/standing ovation/award-worthy.

A beautiful film about a man who finds himself in a fascinating situation. At a time when the West is losing its savagery, he must change his life. At least, that's how most people around him see it. He himself sees it differently and can't imagine living a different life.

It's largely thanks to Lee Marvin and Jack Palance that this is such a good film. They both deliver magnificent performances, and both do so fantastically. Marvin made sure I was rooting for Walsh from beginning to end.

We constantly see Monte Walsh wavering in his doubts. Should he now find another job and start a new life, or is there a way to stay the same? He prefers the latter. This creates the perfect Western atmosphere, clearly conveying the moral of the story. The music creates an old-world atmosphere reminiscent of the Old West, and the nostalgia is palpable.

A drama about an old cowboy unable to adapt to changing times. Monte Walsh was a bit of a disappointment. Especially the first half, where little happens, with slightly comical moments that feel a bit off-key. Ultimately, the film was quite bitter towards the end, a twist I hadn't expected given the mediocre first half. I did like the music, and Palance plays a sympathetic man for a change. There's also a good bit of rodeo in which a half-drunk Monte Walsh tries to ride a wild horse... Paradoxically, it's precisely because the film strays too far from the beaten track that I didn't like it as much.
