The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming plot

"IT'S A PLOT! ...to make the world die laughing!!"

In 1966, a Russian submarine runs aground on a sandbar off the coast of Massachusetts. After futile attempts to break free on his own, an officer secretly lands on a small island with a handful of Russian sailors. It doesn't take long for the rumor to spread that Russian paratroopers have landed.

An original idea to build a comedy around that in the midst of the Cold War that actually turns out to be enjoyable, with crazy situations but also witty innuendo and some satire, drawing on the American flair.

Moreover, the film as a whole demonstrates how far removed the civilian and the ordinary soldier are from the political tug-of-war that so often leads to conditions of war.

Alan Arkin, as the Russian Lieutenant Rozanov, deserves an award for his outstanding performance. Brian Keith, too, as an island spokesman, delivers more than just a caricature.

A decent film in which the inhabitants of a small American island are thrown into a frenzy when the crew of a Russian submarine is stranded. Quite over the top, but in a fun way. However, at a certain point, you’ve seen it all. Still, 3.0 stars because the film looks good and the cast delivers an entertaining performance.
