When the communists win during the Chinese Civil War, the nationalist general Lei sends his wife Yufen to Taiwan. Yufen moves into the house where the Japanese pianist Masako previously lived. Before she was repatriated to Japan after the war, Masako had a relationship with Zekun, a Taiwanese doctor who served in the Japanese army. The illiterate Zhen starts working as a nurse in an army hospital and also tries to earn enough money as a prostitute to make the crossing to Taiwan. Soldier Daqing Tong asks Zhen if she wants to take a picture with him, because as a married man he gets more rations in the army…
