Killers plot

"Inside Us Lives A Killer."

Nomura is the eerily handsome, sharp-dressed, psychopathic serial killer who's out for the women of Tokyo. When the pair put videos of their actions on the internet and see each other, a toxic competition ensues between the two.

Reasonable.

A little bit of everything together. Film is Indonesian/Japanese, but mainly has a South Korean feel. A more conventional plot, with some horrors that you would not immediately expect. But it is not as sharp or hard as a real genre film. Sometimes neither fish nor meat.

I thought the acting was somewhat mediocre, but I have known better from Kazuki Kitamura. Visually it's quite sleek, but it's missing a really nice scene here and there. Furthermore, I didn't really like the classical soundtrack, which was clearly supposed to give the film some extra cachet, but only half succeeded.

Not to mention some cool editing work and distorted sounds here and there. that makes it a bit more special. It's certainly not bad either. The film manages to hide where it is going long enough and every now and then there is quite a brutal scene. But over the almost 140 minutes it is just a bit too little, just not stylish and just not loud enough. Wondering if they have been able to improve with Headshot. I hope so, because as thoroughbred horror directors they did better than this.

3.0*

Not for people with weak stomachs, because there is a lot of explicit violence in this intelligent thriller that raises many moral issues and confronts you as a viewer with the consequences of the human fascination with violence. Bayu [Oka Antara] is a silent photojournalist who tries to save the difficult relationship with his lover and their child. By chance he comes across a live stream of a masked man [Kazuki Kitamura] who streams snuff movies in which he tortures to death young women he has seduced. The frustrated Bayu becomes obsessed with the livestream that gradually influences Bayu's behavior, with dramatic consequences.

The gruesome tortures and murders, often filmed in explicit close-ups, confront you as a viewer with the question why you enjoy watching this so much. What does it add to our lives, what does it say about us and what do we do when we are eyewitnesses to violence? The way in which Nomura almost forces Bayu to identify with him is made very strikingly tangible for the viewer, partly through excellent use of sound effects. The film may be unnecessarily long, but the spectacular finale and final scene are excellently designed and will remain in your mind for a long time.

Directors Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto form an excellent duo who are well aware of what entertainment should entail, but they relax somewhat with Killers. The large addition of drama in particular has a slowing effect, especially due to the rather tired interpretation. As a result, most of the 137 minutes are spent on two not very interesting characters who have nowhere to live, even though Kazuki Kitamura in particular does a more than decent job. The sudden brutality of the violence in between is remarkable and the film looks good visually (with the exception of the ugly computer effects), but Stamboel and Tjahjanto would have done better to cut some of the background stuff to speed it up a bit. to get in.
