Pretty okay.

Very old - one of the oldest I ever saw. Perhaps that is why it is quite far from what I usually see and am used to. The spirit of the times of 1913 naturally causes some hurdles to be overcome, but the restoration seems to me to have been a success. In any case, beautiful as a representation of the times and apparently - if I read it this way - it was also important for the life of the Swede in 1913. Narratively quite dramatic, but that does not necessarily mean that it is poorly presented. It is also striking that there are still discussions today about the shortage of interesting female roles, while this film was 'normally' made more than a century ago. The greatest charm lies in bringing to life figures that can usually only be found in photographs - posing in a photo studio in the nicest costume, the smile hidden under a thick mustache.

There's something to those restored old silent films. Netflix apparently has a number of them in its offering. Not that they will attract the large mainstream audience. With the moody, calm piano music, the film has something serene. It is something different from the bombastic orchestral music that is sometimes quite overwhelming.

A social drama here in which a woman loses her possessions due to debt and poverty. First her husband dies due to an illness and then she also loses her children due to placement. Not because she is not a good mother per se, but because the view at the time was that the poor were less able to care for their children. Pathetic.

Very few pancartes with text. It is mainly the images that speak for themselves. Nice to have picked it up.
