Ça Commence Aujourd'hui plot

Daniel Lefebvre is headteacher in a village school near Valenciennes. Due to the closure of the mines, the standard of living of most people is very low and the children have few prospects for the future. Daniel must therefore constantly act as a confidant, social worker, aid worker and political activist. When his girlfriend also asks him to become a father, it all threatens to become too much for him.

Alternating raw and warm social drama, which the French seem to have a patent on. The authentic story slowly but surely creeps into you. This is not least due to the way in which Philippe Torrenton fulfills his role as committed headmaster and social devil hunter. It's poignant how often he runs into a wall of unwillingness or powerlessness. The film frequently alternates between recognizable dramatic and heart-warming moments. A film that lingers; with me anyway.

It didn't take long for me to think of that topper that is "Hors Normes" and which also, albeit on a slightly different level, emphasizes the tireless, deeply committed efforts of a few people who have to battle the consequences of unemployment , poverty and neglect and do not always receive the help they deserve, although the social apparatus that is responsible for this faces almost similar problems.

Bertrand Tavernier tells his story in a very realistic, real-life film adaptation and yet leaves an impression of playfulness, despite the sad background. The classroom scenes - how the French love those folk children's songs - are shot by a hidden camera, which creates a charming, somewhat natural quality and gives the film a particularly fresh cachet. The final scene is wonderfully faithful and takes you back to school parties you once attended...

Philippe Torreton is perfect for his role. Smooth, rough, driven and not without emotion.

A school director who, together with passionate colleagues, does his best with heart and soul to provide good education to disadvantaged youth in a northern French region. Opposed by economic reality and the arrogant bureaucratic government.

A French copy of Ken Loach in everything, if it weren't for the fact that this film is one level lower on every level.
