It's best that the acting performances are up to standard (Dennis Quaid in particular typifies his character very well), because the film itself is all too weak in the middle and then looks more like an unpretentious romantic case. The opening scenes do contain drama and tension, but the why of the denouement in the story does not seem clear to me.

Good film about a man who uses his son to commit thefts. The plot may have too many coincidences and the film is on the long side. But the characters are well developed and the acting is excellent. The film has a nice atmosphere that is largely determined by the location (Texas). Partly thanks to the good finale, just 3.5 stars.

Revised. A bit of an underappreciated and overlooked mix of thriller and drama at the time of release, but the film has stood the test of time just fine for now. The first-class cast, with atypical roles for both Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan (still married at the time), as well as an intriguing script and beautiful camera work, ensure an atmospheric, uncomfortably smoldering mystery that is slowly unfolded. A little too long and Ryan is occasionally a little too hyper, but all in all, this is definitely worth it.
