Solidity.

Simmons is a true genre maven. His films don't offer much originality, so it's best to leave that expectation at the door. Animal is a pure creature flick and does little to truly distinguish itself.

On the other hand, it's not a bad film either. The acting is reasonably good for this type of film, and the characters aren't as annoying as they usually are. The structure is well-behaved and stays within the lines. The film also gracefully breezes through all the clichés.

The creature itself is a bit disappointing, which is a shame for the suspense. The visuals aren't particularly well-done, and the design is also rather mediocre. Fortunately, it's often dark enough that it never becomes truly distracting. At least it's menacing, which adds some tension.

So a nice filler for the true horror fan, but the film doesn't aim for higher.

2.5*

Dirty.

The film isn't good at all, but I certainly don't think it's as bad as its current ratings. The beast is a bit unusual, but nicely disgusting, and the gore could have been more pronounced at times. It's also funny that two former Nickelodeon actresses were in it.

The tension was indeed lacking, and the story is anything but original. So this film isn't truly innovative. The beast itself was delightfully nasty, but clearly not very well-designed. The kills, however, could have been more pronounced.

A short, captivating film. There's enough going on to keep you interested, but due to the lack of suspense and a somewhat original story, I only gave it a 2.5* rating.
