Ireland, 1936. In the small town of Ballybeg in Donegal, the Mundy family lives far from the hustle and bustle. The family consists of five unmarried sisters and their brother, a missionary priest who returns from Africa after many years. One of the sisters, Christina, gave birth to a son, Michael. The birth of this illegitimate child has put the extremely Catholic family in an unpleasant situation. Nevertheless, little Michael is the center of attention and the five women give him a lot of attention, education and playing with him. One day Gerry Evans, a traveling salesman, shows up who wants to see his son Michael before he leaves for Spain to fight Franco...
