In 16th-century Venice, some courtesans enjoy unique privileges. They are rich, dress in red, read, write poetry and music and discuss affairs of state with the men who rule the Republic. When Veronica Franco comes of age, she cannot marry Marco Venier, whom she loves, because she comes from a good family, but is poor. She is given the choice: enter the monastery or become a courtesan. She chooses the latter and is trained by her mother and becomes a celebrity with her beauty and intelligence. She becomes a heroine when she helps convince France to help Venice in its war with the Turks, but when the plague hits, the church accuses her of witchcraft.

A very nice movie. The setting is also stunning in beautiful Venice. You just imagine yourself in that time and place when you watch the movie. At least .... I had!

Quite a nice film about Veronica Franco, at the time pretty much the most famous courtesan of Venice.
Film ripples along a bit at first, but gradually becomes more fun and especially the ending is worthwhile.
With the unknown Catherine McCormack, the makers of the film have found a beautiful woman for the leading role. People who just want to watch the film for Moira Kelly and/or Naomi Watts can save themselves the trouble, because both only have a mini-role.

Good film in which a young woman decides to become a courtesan in order to be with her lover. A good story set in Venice in the 16th century, in which the position of women is central. As a love drama just a little less fascinating. Beautiful locations and costumes. Secretly a cast with quite a few well-known names. A narrow 3.5 stars.
