More than a nice war film from the old box, which only lasts a little too long. The last half hour consists mainly of the same images: planes attacking the intended dams. At some point you have seen it often enough.

The special effects are mediocre. The anti-aircraft guns and explosions don't look very realistic. I was a bit annoyed though.

Despite the unsurprising and original moments, the film manages to generate some tension, which keeps you watching fascinated for two hours (except for a few scenes towards the end). Especially because of the good photography, nice music and the good acting it is more than worth it.

This remains an impressive and exciting film that only suffers from the mediocre FX (the overpainted bombs on the water in the beginning, the German anti-aircraft guns, the exploding dams, the locomotive that ends up in the water). The build-up is calm but never boring, with the jumping back and forth between Wallis and Gibson's preparations providing effective variety, and the calm homecoming of the survivors and the silent absence of the missing and fallen is poignant: "Aren't [ i]you[/i] going to turn in, Gibby?" "No, I... I have to write some letters first." Excellent understated acting in the best English tradition, with the absence of love affairs as an added plus; especially Redgrave is strong as a doubting but fortunately not a clichéd absent-minded professor. Small role for Robert Shaw, very small role for Patrick McGoohan.

Entertaining, albeit too long, war film about the plan of the Allies to blow up three dams in the Ruhr area, as a result of which a large part of the German war industry would come to a standstill. The build-up is on the slow side and many characters remain underexposed, but fortunately the film is nevertheless fascinating and we are working towards an exciting climax. It is a pity that director Michael Anderson's ambitions turned out to be greater than the budget, given certain clumsy special effects. And that black dog named Nigger is of course not acceptable, not even at the time.
