During WWII, Walter Eckland leads a secluded life as a beachcomber in the Pacific Ocean where he enjoys the peace and the whiskey. He is also an excellent plane spotter, which will come in handy for British Commander Houghton, who is looking for someone who can keep him informed about the movements of the Japanese air fleet. With a cunning ruse he manages to persuade the reluctant Walter. Reluctantly, Walter tries to make the best of it, until relative peace is disturbed by the appearance of Governess Catherine and seven girls who survived a plane crash.
