Tragicomic film that I really appreciate. The sad thing is that places like "True Directions" actually exist. The funniest scenes remain those with the effeminate homosexuals. The love between the main actresses is very beautiful. I think Clea Duvall is also attracted to women in real life.

Mediocre film about a girl who is sent to a rehabilitation camp by her parents because she is homosexual. The decoration with bright colors fits well with the thick tone of the film. Despite a cast with quite a few well-known names, the characters did not really get off the ground. The film could also have been a bit sharper.

Surprisingly fun, this trashy satire that speaks out in cheerful candy colors against social pressure and the impossibility of finding your true nature through self-examination. How the mores of decency are an obstacle to the natural search for your own sexual identity. But I'm a Cheerleader offers something more than just simple entertainment.

At first, the film does offer that entertainment. The film tackles the theme mainly in a comical and anything but subtle and tasteful way. Teenagers with alleged homosexual tendencies are sent by their decent parents to a country house in the countryside to be cured of their tendency. From that moment on, the film sprinkles hilarious clichés. The therapy doesn't work for anyone. Homosexual tendencies are exaggerated. Parents are unloving, unreasonable or very naive. That kind of thing. All the clichés are used with a blunt axe. I already said it. The humor is anything but subtle and tasteful, but I had to laugh a lot.

Especially in the first half of the film, the tastelessness is rampant. Delicious. In the second half, there is room for more subtlety when the blossoming love between Megan (Natasha Lyonne) and Graham (Clea DuVall) gets the attention. This is done with astonishing sensitivity and requires more than easy acting. Lyonne and DuVall do that well. Not very surprising. Both have since grown into reasonably renowned actresses. In this context, it is also nice to mention that Michelle Williams and Julie Delpy also have a role in the film. Williams as a lesbian patient. Delpy as a sexy lesbian. I didn't recognize either of them, but read it in the credits.

But I'm a Cheerleader is both a film with simple, flat humor and a film that has a few tender and tasteful scenes. My expectation of a purely flat humorous film was not met. The film has more to offer than that. I was pleasantly surprised.
