“It's really about control, my body, my mind. Who was going to own it? Them? Or me? I'm not a one man woman. Bottom line.”

Nice. Everything shows that She's Gotta Have It is one of Spike Lee's first films, but the man's signature energy is already fully present here. Lee always manages to create a world that feels alive and realistic, with crisp dialogue, a lovely pace and a jazzy soundtrack. The black-and-white images and the well-cast actors also contribute to this. She's Gotta Have It was clearly made for little money, but that is also the charm of the film.

Good film about a young, black, free-spirited woman from Brooklyn and the men in her life. Not really a story, but good scenes and dialogues. The different characters are introduced in a nice way. Although fairly fresh, the black and white images and the jazzy soundtrack sometimes create a moody whole. This first Spike Lee joint is immediately clear a Spike Lee Joint.

uh.

They are hardly ever made more exhausting than this film these days. I was also quite shocked that this is from Spike Lee. As a director he is quite something and only three years after this film he even delivered a favorite of mine. Here and there you can recognize his directing experiments, but She's Gotta Have It is above all an inestimably boring sit.

The acting in particular is too sad for words. For a film that relies heavily on dialogue and connection, that's a big problem. I can therefore not support the opinions that Johns is taking the film in tow, I found her playing extremely lousy. Lee does his very best to make each character a completely different and idiosyncratic type, but even Lee himself acts so badly that it doesn't come across at all. Any form of comedy also falls directly into the water.

The biggest asset is perhaps the finale itself, where it was suddenly found necessary to add a moral to the film. Then I'm mainly talking about Johns who comes to lecture the gentlemen. Sitting in amazement watching this ending of the film. If anyone has no right to speak, it's Johns. Sometimes nice editing, admittedly. The part I liked the most was the credits, where people are just themselves instead of these cardboard and boring characters. By far some of the worst acting I've ever seen. I am glad that the film could be closed after 84 minutes.
