Excellent psychological thriller about the somewhat precarious combination of crime and hypnosis. It doesn't all look believable, but Otto Preminger knows how to maintain the tension until the far too simple denouement. That's a real letdown.

As is often the case, the dazzling Gene Tierney also plays a woman with an instruction manual in this film and she once again does well. However, the best role is reserved for José Ferrer as the manipulative villain. Good film, especially thanks to the convincing acting.

Pleasant film noir with strong performances by a constantly psychotic Gene Tierney, concerned husband Richard Conte, villain Jose Ferren, not to mention police detective Charles Bickford. I like the Freudian atmosphere that emerged in the films of the forties, as is also the case in Whirlpool. Gene Tierney is haunted by ghosts from the past - a favorite theme in noir city - and associated neuroses.

Agree with the opinions on the forum that certain developments in the script - I'm not going to repeat them - are not very credible. Nevertheless, fans of the genre will have a great time with this psychological thriller, in which the emphasis is on talking rather than on action.

Otto Preminger's direction is excellent, as is the cinematography by three-time Oscar winner Arthur C. Miller.
For example, I think the film contains at least one masterful scene in which Jose Ferrer listens to the gramophone record with confessions of the same Theresa in the house of the murdered Theresa Randolph (Barbara O'Neil), while Theresa's painting looks down on him. The same scene reminded me (oh, Freud is already lurking around the corner) of the classic Laura (1944), also directed by Preminger and starring Gene Tierney. This is enhanced by the beautiful score by David Raksin, in his recognizable romantic style, who also composed the music for Laura.
