After Tetsuo my hunger for cyberpunk was not completely satisfied. ED 80000 V is also a revision, but I really liked this film the first time (unlike Tetsuo). Films in this subgenre are not common, so comparisons are difficult to avoid. Well, compared to Tetsuo, this film is a lot calmer. Even in this short film, Ishii takes his time for a relatively long build-up. Both main characters are introduced and the film initially relies mainly on bubbling tension (literally!) that occasionally escapes from the surface.

Visually, ED 80000 V is really beautiful. High contrast black and white and great camera work (particularly the tracking shots through the streets) make the film very enjoyable. Even more striking is of course the soundtrack. The mix of noise and industrial rock is wonderfully sonically and perfectly integrated with the beautiful images. The story merely functions as a framework and we have to wait for the climax before the film really gets going.

The manic chaos of Tetsuo is never achieved, but that is obviously not a fair point of comparison. This film stands completely on its own two feet and would certainly be a good introduction to the cyberpunk genre. ED 80000 V is a slightly comical, very atmospheric and sufficiently pumping experience that will boost the adrenaline in many living rooms.

Tetsuo without the horror but just as stylish and above all just as much adrenaline. 50 minutes full throttle with great music, sitting still is not possible. My first Gakuryû Ishii film and I want to see everything, what a style this man has, madness from Japan at its best!

A bizarre, but also clever film about electricity. For once, it is not a spider bite that causes a metamorphosis, but a high voltage shock that transforms a human individual into a kind of super hero. On an audiovisual level, it is definitely worth seeing and the short playing time also helps. And the stirring soundtrack will also appeal to many. Yet the film could not completely captivate me, at least not as the film progressed.

Certainly not bad, but not really for me I think. But I do understand that this punk sci-fi appeals to many.
