Child of God plot
"Murder is his salvation"
Lester Ballard, an expelled and violent man living in the mountains of Sevier County, can best be described as "a child of God". Ballard's life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order. After being successively robbed of his parents, homes and a number of other things, Ballard literally and figuratively sinks to the level of a caveman who sinks deeper and deeper into a life of crime.
