When I first saw the film adaptation of A streetcar named Desire from 1951 starring Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh (perhaps the two best film renditions I've ever seen) I was quite taken aback, and the many times that I have reviewed the film since then it has lost little to none of its power. And it might not be fair, and other viewers might not be bothered by this (maybe because they don't know Streetcar, maybe because they just don't tend to compare these two films), but in my mind Blue Jasmine constantly forced the comparison with that earlier film, and Allen's film falls short on all fronts. Cate Blanchett could still be the savior, but although I normally think her very highly, I find her portrayal as Jasmine / Jeanette very contrived and studied : it might be the first time I see the "strings" on her, and in retrospect I would have preferred to have seen her Oscar end up with Judi Dench for his touching role in Philomena. And another extremely annoying trait: Allen's love for old-style jazz and songs from that period is well-known, but his constant use of it in his films is slowly but surely getting on my nerves, and when the music there is also as unsuitable for this as in this case, I wonder if the music editor shouldn't have slammed his fist on the table here. But then of course you don't do that with someone who is shown such respect as a living legend. In any case, I can't muster any enthusiasm for the story, the interpretations, or the use of music in this film.

Very strong. Possibly Allen's best I've seen. Terrible human being that Jasmine... towards the end I took devilish pleasure in all the trouble that befell her. She is a woman from a modest background but who has become addicted to a fashionable lifestyle through her marriage to a wealthy businessman. However, her materialistic life is shattered when it turns out that her husband has been cheating on her for years (and also turns out to be a scammer).

Destitute, she visits her sister who offers her shelter to support her. The way she talks about her much more modest sister and her friend's "looser" shows that she looks down on them. Soon you also understand that Jasmine is in fact a superficial woman without talent who depended on the wealthy existence to survive. Woody Allen's smart move I thought is making Jasmine fall in love again with yet another rich man who can save her from the "miserable" social situation.

Wealth, status and success are nothing to envy, the director seems to want to say, these people are often more unhappy than people who have much less in this life. Towards the end, Jasmine is good for the madhouse All the actors are doing really well and with a lot of enthusiasm; of course with Blanchett standing out

A wonderful movie. I think Sally Hawkins and Cate Blanchett are top actresses, and the film is beautifully put together. A good story that kept me enthralled from start to finish, partly because of the great game and the intriguing characters that Hawkins and Blanchett play. strong! 4*
