Showgirls plot

"Leave your inhibitions at the door. The show is about to begin."

Nomi Malone arrives hitchhiking in Las Vegas. She meets Molly and starts working as a dancer at the infamous Cheetah Club. After a lap dance with Zack Carey, great gentleman of the Stardust, she is offered a part in a grotesque show. She also meets Cristal Connors, the show's leading lady and a bisexual drug-sniffing beauty. Meanwhile, Jim writes a song for her and her friend gets into serious trouble. However, Nomi's star is rising very quickly and when she sees her chance to take over Cristal's role, she does not hesitate for a moment.

Got to admire last night in a sold out CINEMATEKbe on 35mm, visually quite overwhelming on the big screen. The dramatic narrative rattles enough, but Verhoeven's visual direction is superb and is perfectly complemented by Vacano's dynamic camera work and Goldblatt's virtuoso editing.

The exaggerated game play and the brutal tone of the film actually work very well, as does the total lack of good taste, too bad that the script has dropped quite a few stitches. The most problematic are the 'bookend' scenes with the hitchhiking Nomi.

Solid 3.5*.

I once bought that film on DVD, but because at the time it was declared the worst film ever (got several raspberry awards including worst film, worst director, worst screenplay, worst actress) I just left this film behind. But now I'm reading an enthusiastic Quentin review and so I have to give that movie (after blowing the dust for a while) a chance. I see a bit of Faust's story in this – wanting to reach the top at all costs and Verhoeven makes Las Vegas a bit like hell that throws all kinds of temptations in the viewer's face. The dance pieces (titled goddess!) in particular are extravagantly kitschy hells. Above that, all characters (except Berkley's roommate) are amoral, everyone abuses everyone and no one is what he/she makes out. Well, 'un film rate' they say in my beloved France. Personal vision (his American reality of showbiz) in a beautiful cinematography but the story is like a 'flatline' and no peaks. In his book 'meer Verhoeven' Paul Verhoeven concludes that this theme deserved a better screenplay and I will therefore not contradict the author.

Hugely entertaining. Looks like an exploitation film. What makes the film so captivating is the totally blurred line between parody and failed product. The difference is no longer visible. High joke density and cool camera work. Also tits.
