The Machine plot
"They Rise. We Fall."
Deep into the second Cold War, Britain's defense ministry is striving for a different and ultimate weapon. Computer programmer Vincent McCarthy unexpectedly comes up with an answer in the form of 'The Machine', a super-strong human cyborg. When a software bug destroys his lab, McCarthy takes his creation underground, away from prying eyes.

The movie starts off pretty nice, but from the moment that girl becomes The Machine, the movie collapses. First of all, Lotz's acting is laughably bad from then on and the film looks clumsy in terms of CGI. All the AI clichés are passed and the climax is weak, only to end dumber. In no way comparable to Ex Machina.

Great sci fi movie. The Machine can come across as a bit aloof and emotionless, but just like in Ex Machina, for example, there is an intriguing story about the dangers of AI, and how far you should go with its development. Because from what point can AI be considered human? And how far can you go before robots become a threat to humanity? Caity Lotz does well and convinces both as a combat robot and as an AI that develops human emotions. Compliments also for the underground sets and the score. It makes for an atmospheric film.

Reasonable.
Not a bad film, which is slightly underrated in my opinion here on MM. But I wouldn't call it a very good movie either. In the end, the most remarkable thing is what the director managed to achieve with a very small budget.
The film opens strongly. Nice and hard and effective, so it is remarkable that a large part of the rest of the film is quite slow. There is little pace, and it does go a bit more in the drama direction in the end.
Plus, the biggest pain point is 'Ava' herself. Lotz plays her part very poorly and inconclusively. It's all a little too strong. That puzzled expression that appears on her face as a robot for almost the entire film is rather unintentionally comical.
Moreover, the film does not always captivate. The film is just a bit too slow, and at a certain point you have actually seen it as a viewer. Then you have to wait for something to happen again, which only comes in the final phase.
For the rest it looks very nice. IMDb mentions a budget of 1 million, and then the budget has certainly been used optimally. Very cool designs sometimes and nice ideas. James is quite interesting as a director, but seems to have some trouble with his pace.
