"Il ya longtemps que je t'aime", "Tous les Soleils"....Philippe Claudel makes beautiful films.

While this "Avant l'Hiver" lacks the necessary action that many consider indispensable, the film is neatly and intelligently constructed, has an interesting psychological resonance related to family issues, alienation, unfulfilled dreams, and disappointments, and ultimately holds a surprising ending in store.

Daniel Auteuil and Kristine Scott Thomas are outstanding as always, and the film is full of beautiful music, especially from Puccini's "La Bohème," with a beautiful "Roses of Picardie" as a cherry on top.

The beautiful photographic image compositions are also to be appreciated.

A somewhat older surgeon is trapped in his marriage to his wife. Then he receives roses from a stranger and meets a young woman. That seems like an old cliché and suggests where the film is heading. But that is not the case with this film. The film remains shrouded in a great veil of mystery. And that is what makes it captivating. Even when the story finally reaches a resolution, the mystery has not really disappeared. Not a particularly special or spectacular film, but certainly very engaging and excellently acted.

Quite an impressive film, with a fine performance by Daniel Auteuil as the surgeon suffering from burnout and in a midlife crisis, who becomes infatuated with a young Moroccan woman. A relationship he initially resists, but later surrenders to. With the necessary reservations and reservations, mind you. But his motives are not always entirely clear to himself, to his wife (a beautiful, calm portrayal by Kristin Scott Thomas), and to the viewer. I quite like that, that ambivalence. Surprising ending. Despite the somewhat stiff start, a beautiful film.
