It soon became clear that Last Vegas is a kind of Hangover for oldies. To be honest, with some adjustments and an R-rated scenario (a bit rougher) this would have been a much nicer ending to that trilogy.

Last Vegas never excels in originality, but from minute 1 that quickly becomes clear to me. The film has to rely mainly on the cast and they play really excellent. Especially Klein and Freeman are hilarious. What I've seen from Freeman in recent years is even the most refreshing role (if only they used his comedic talent in Ted 2) and Klein, who is barely allowed to play in the big movies, also shows that that can happen a bit more. DeNiro plays on autopilot, but on the other hand, because of the click with the fellow players, it was now much less disruptive than usual. Douglas always plays solidly and also with this extremely predictable character he makes the best of it. The film excels in predictability but I can keep repeating it: the cast makes up for a lot and hides many problems under the bed. Where the jokes may be objectively of a mediocre level, the actors know how to get the best out of them and they get a kind of warmth. The film has that warmth all the time. Despite the characters being flat and rather caricature, the past of the characters and their current situation are well brought out. It's not a crude comedy (perhaps for the oldies who want to see their old stars) like The Hangover but rather a different take on the concept with a heartwarming atmosphere. That the final could already be predicted 90 minutes in advance, I take it again because of the wonderful ride that led to that end.

Last Vegas is certainly not a topper and excels in predictability. But the cast and the chemistry between them was clearly visible and obscured many things which makes this film a wonderful heartwarming comedy with a surprising Freeman in particular.

Because of the first word of the title I guessed that this would be a last reunion because one of the very old friends with a deadly disease one last time etc., but no, the reason is a bit more light-hearted, and so the film doesn't offer much in the end more than what you might expect based on the cast: four top actors doing their thing together. But the merciless cheerfulness of Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline is contagious, Michael Douglas actually has some depth to his character, and Robert De Niro gets a pleasant prickiness. In addition, Mary Steenburgen is a pleasant catalyst, the ensemble playing is also fine and some of the jokes are quite successful, so all in all this is an acceptable feel-good-cum-stargazing movie. And that moralistic twist for Kevin Kline, who doubted that?

“I'm getting married.”

“To that young lady who's half your age?”

“She's almost 32.”

Great film about a couple of old guys who have a bachelor party in Las Vegas. One of them (Michael Douglas) is getting married to a girlfriend 30 years her junior. Last Vegas is not very funny and it is also very predictable, but that is made up for by strong acting from Douglas, De Niro, Freeman, Kline and Steenburgen. It won't be an over the top party like in The Hangover, but the film does it with the standard Viagra and prostate jokes. Not a big deal, and you even take the obligatory drama into the bargain.
