Tsuma to Shite Onna to Shite plot
Keijiro and Ayako Kono seem to have a fairytale middle-class marriage. He is a respected professor and the couple have two lovely children. Yet everything beneath the surface turns out not to be so pretty, as the kids are actually those of Kono's mistress Miho, whose bar the couple sponsors to compensate for giving up the kids. Ayako has Miho spy on in hopes of ever catching her in a misstep, after which she thinks Miho will stay out of her husband's mind forever. However, Miho gets tired of this and soon the rivalry between the two women gets out of hand.

I consider this film about the psychological warfare between a wife and her husband's mistress of longevity one of director Mikio Naruse's best films. Aside from the story, this is primarily due to the way the two antagonists, Chikage Awashima and Hideko Takamine, portray their respective roles. That being said, the almost hilarious Chōko Iida, as Takamine's elderly mother, steals every scene in which she appears.
A gripping, intriguing, straightforward drama, beautifully designed by Naruse.
