Misunderstood and thus unprocessed events from the past mean that Sutter puts on an armor of indifference, bravado and alcohol to protect himself from the outside world. That will cost him his girlfriend. Then he meets Aimee, who, from a completely different world of experience, does not even see that armor, pierces right through it and thus only increases his confusion and despair. Growing up goes from au.

Director Ponsoldt has made an atmospheric coming-of-age film with its heart in the right place. In addition to the fascinating story, this is partly due to the excellent interpretations. Miles Teller is very good, but the very natural looking Shailene Woodley steals every scene she appears in. That's no surprise anymore...

OK.

Indeed a somewhat brave, but somehow catchy story of childhood love and the problems that this entails. It's not that this film necessarily does anything new or stands out, but it's a great story in the end.

I especially liked Woodley. Normally I think she chooses the wrong roles in movies, but here she actually fits in very well as the good teenager. Teller was fine, but makes little impression in a role that is supposed to make a lot of impression.

The film is good and visually it is also quite good. Sometimes there is a good moment, such as longer takes with longer conversations, but these are minimal and therefore not immediately noticeable. In terms of locations also quite fine, the school itself could have used a little more.

The film has to rely mainly on the chemistry that is quite successful. In the end, it's also the only thing that really makes the film stand up, because all side issues are just a bit too good and just within the lines. It does it a bit too little.

Good romance, a bit too subtle comedy and ok drama. So grade is also an ok.

As with any movie I'm about to watch, I don't read what it's about right in advance. I did that a long time ago and that's how I select the films. But for a long time when I was watching this movie I felt like I had made a wrong choice. It seemed to be such a typical high school movie about typical high school romances. Not really my thing. Fortunately, the film built up nicely and eventually went into depth. Not a very special film but just good. No more and no less.
