Mediocre film about the murder trial against world-famous music producer Phil Spector. Although quite interesting, the film focuses a little too much on the technical aspects of the process. The eccentric Phil Spector therefore remains somewhat superficial (despite an otherwise excellent role by Al Pacino). Also, the movie could have been a bit longer. This could have been more, just not 3.0 stars.

"This is a work of fiction. It's not "based on a true story." It is a drama inspired by actual persons in a trial, but it is neither an attempt to depict the actual persons, nor to comment upon the trial or its outcomes."

With this strange disclaimer, the 'fictitious' reconstruction of the run-up to the trial begins in which the genius and temperamental music producer Phil Spector [Al Pacino], the mastermind behind 'The Wall Of Sound' who produced mega hits for The Beatles, Ike & Tina, among others Turner and The Righteous Brothers, is on trial for the murder of Lana Clarkson who was found dead in Spector's home in February 2003. Helen Mirren plays Linda Kenney Baden, the skeptical lawyer defending Spector who gradually begins to believe in his innocence.

David Mamet (Wag The Dog, Glengarry Glen Ross) gives the two stars rock solid material to work with and Pacino delivers one of his best (and most controversial) performances of the last 20 years. This is an actor's film through and through and David Mamet does not allow himself to be tempted by all kinds of visual tricks: the fireworks between Mirren and Pacino are enough to keep you captivated from start to finish.

My expectations are probably too high when David Mamet has written anything. Still the man behind the smashing acting spectacle Glengarry Glenn Ross. This feels like a bit too easy-going snack.

If court drama doesn't quite succeed, it lacks the suspense, venom and emotions of such a case. Too many important aspects are also skipped, such as what the driver thought he heard. I found the case to exonerate Spector quite strong. He could never have been close. That's why I was surprised about the ending that is rushed off with some text. Mirren and especially the eccentric Pacino, who also has an explosive Tony Montana moment during a session exercise, are certainly enjoyable . Although the theme (the biases in a court case like this, the role of the media, how important the "optics" are) may have been better dealt with in plenty of other films, the film does a good job of empathizing with Mirren's character who genuinely doubts Spector's guilt.

Spector's main crime seems to be successful and, moreover, a strange little man. They want him to be a monster. But he attracts self-destructive fringe characters who see one last chance to make it...at least to the headlines. Something to think about.
