Anyone fascinated by the legend of the house in Amityville that was central to a vast series of horror films (starting with The Amityville Horror (1979)) should not miss this documentary. Daniel Lutz was one of the residents of the house at the time of the (alleged) supernatural occurrences and allowed himself to be filmed during several sessions with a psychologist, as well as being interviewed by Eric Walter. Lutz is clearly a traumatized man, but above all, he is a bundle of contradictions. All of this is placed in context by specialists and journalists who reported on the Lutz family story 35 years earlier. The specialists offer an explanation for everything, but Walter refrains from critically questioning that theory. Daniel's brother and sister decided not to cooperate with this film. However, it is difficult to draw firm conclusions from that either. This is certainly fascinating.

A bare-bones documentary that dusts off a notorious figure from the original legend in the form of Daniel Lutz. A troubled figure who clearly struggles with his past, the processing of this is shown fairly extensively in this documentary. The unfortunate thing is that director Eric Walter and his team don't have much else to say, and therefore simply fill the running time with nonsense such as a ritual between Lutz and Lorraine Warren. What exactly does such a thing add? It will only stretch out the doubts of Lutz himself, who is clearly already having a hard time. In that respect, My Amityville Horror is little more than failing to offer a tragic figure the help he so desperately needs, resulting in a heap of meaningless, irrelevant scenes. Irrelevant as a variation on the legend, too empty as a source of information, and any form of tension or mystery is also skillfully avoided. It is all not great, but still better than a lot of cinematic trash, especially since Lutz does evoke some admiration.
