What do they have against Nicole Kidman? I thought she was an excellent Grace.

Of course, anyone who expected a diopic gets a very short passage, and a political one at that, from the life of the star princess.

Not a top film, but still rated too low.

That Grace must have had one hell of a walk-in closet. Nicole Kidman looks absolutely gorgeous. She wears another magnificent dress in every scene, but what do you expect with such a figure, everything suits her. Her hair is always perfect, especially when she wakes up. And the make-up artist did a world-class job. Hats off!

The camera work is also well taken care of. About Monaco from the 60s: nothing but praise, beautifully visualized.

With so much attention to detail in the decoration it is of course understandable that director Olivier Dahan and writer Arash Amel did not have time to let a little historical awareness seep into this film. Nevertheless I watched it for 2 hours with goodwill and was planning to reward Grace of Monaco with a well-deserved 2 stars. Until that speech at the end. Au revoir et adieu, half a point off, we are not completely stupid after all.

Five years after Grace Kelly [Nicole Kidman] ended her film career in favor of marrying Prince Rainier [Tim Roth] of Monaco, Alfred Hitchcock [Roger Ashton-Griffiths] offers her the lead role in Marnie. It's a dream role and Grace has still not found her feet as a monarch, but the offer coincides with a diplomatic row with French Minister of State Emile Pelletier [Olivier Rabourdin], who, on behalf of President de Gaulle [Andre Penvern], demands that Rainier tax its citizens and hand the proceeds over to France. The diplomatic unrest increases the tension between Rainier and Grace, forcing Grace to rethink her role. It's either the role of Hollywood screen diva or that of Rainier's wife and Princess of Monaco. The outcome is of course known, but Arash Amel's screenplay speculates on the events and considerations that ultimately lead to that outcome. Badly received historical drama isn't all that bad. The only problem is Nicole Kidman, who with her fierce eyes, cold appearance and her height was a no-go as Grace Kelly, even though she does what she can.
