This one was high on the list for a while, although I didn't expect it to become one of Jeunet's best works. And it isn't.

Old-fashioned enjoyed the traditional many playful, original finds that Jeunet crams into his films. Nice, yet wafer-thin, story that never really gets a soul. That is (usually) inherent if, like Jeunet, you want to show the aforementioned original finds and creativity in abundance.

Unfortunately, the film does fly out of control at the end during the cringe-inducing studio scene. It's a pity.

Nice outing this. It would be great if Jeunet once again made a film that is full of creativity, but at the same time tells a story with a real heart.

3.5*

Disappointed.

What a pity. In my third Jeunet I felt the same way. To this day, I've been dying to see more of his movies, and now TS Spivet came on Film1. High expectations because I also loved Amelie at the time. And after seeing all those directors who follow Jeunet as an example, one of his films was finally available again.

But it is a pity that I recognize Jeunet much less in this. The big difference with Amelie is that she is American. Unfortunately, that means that some of the magic is lost, and besides, Jeunet seems to have restrained himself.

It is visually still very nice. Excellent camera work, sometimes fine details and beautiful colors in the landscape, on the trains and around the surroundings. But it does lack that absorbing power of Amelie, with a lot of detail in the film. That detail is sometimes still there, but not nearly as much and absorbing as the aforementioned.

Acting is good. Catlett is remarkably enthusiastic, albeit clearly inexperienced. Makes sense at that age. For the rest, there are other well-known headlines that make a reasonable impression. Carter, for example, is still fun, but otherwise a little less interesting.

It's a pity that Jeunet seems to be stepping on the brakes, the camera work is never very interesting and in the last part Jeunet chokes on satire that is too striking and too strong, which does not necessarily benefit the film. Anyway, it's not funny.

Some strong moments, but generally not the Jeunet I expected. Less detail and I no longer recognize that genius that I recognized in Amelie here. Hope the other Jeunet projects contain more power. Maybe also add other expectations now.

A youth film about a hyper-intelligent ten-year-old boy who wins a prestigious scientific prize and has to travel through America to receive the prize. It's an extremely improbable and unbelievable story, but it works when it comes to a children's film. The movie flows well and looks good. The design is the most special thing about the film, but that is what Jeunet is the director for.
