Varvakis is a born sailor. With his small, handcrafted boat, he leaves his native island of Psara to seek his fortune, just as the tumultuous Russo-Turkish war in Greek waters is underway. When he deploys his boat against the Turkish fleet, he demands a reward from Tsarina Catherine the Great. The charming Varvakis becomes a welcome guest in Russian high society. However, a chance encounter with a fisherman is the key to Varvakis' success. He devises a method to keep caviar fresh during the long journey to Greece.
