The son of a nobleman and a concubine, Duk-moo can never hold a government position during the Joseon period in which he lives. He is therefore only a bookseller. Korea's most powerful nobleman at the time, Myung-soo Jo, wants the exclusive rights to sell ice cream, very valuable at the time. That's why he banishes his biggest competitor, Duk-moo's father, and Dong-soo, the chief of the ice warehouse. This gives Duk-moo the idea to steal Myung-soo Jo's entire stock of ice cream.
