The Family Next Door plot
Rose is dissatisfied with her life as the wife of George Pierce, who is a plumber in a small town. She has visions of being a rich woman. When her wise-cracking son Sammy hears that a railroad is being built through the city, she is convinced that the family can become rich by purchasing the parcels along the right side of the road. Her patriarchal husband, however, laughs at the idea, but Rose and Sammy learn that Cora Stewart, the wealthy widow in town, has already withdrawn her savings and assume that she, too, is interested in buying the lots. Secretly, both now also want to withdraw money from the bank.
