I'm kinda surprised to see a rescue at the end, if I had portrayed it like that I have big doubts about that but I thought it was obvious he died and went to some sort of afterlife, until I get it here didn't even think of another possibility. In any case, Redford doesn't choose lazy roles like several contemporaries and it's refreshing that the film keeps everything very focused. So it works without any explanation (except for the opening monologue) and almost without words. In the end, I was less interested than hoped and I can't fully explain why. Find the predecessor and successor of Chandor clearly stronger.

A solo sea sailor hits a floating container and gets a hole in the hull through which water runs into the ship and all equipment fails. And so everything goes from bad to worse. Actually all very predictable and then also almost two hours long. So pretty boring. I'm curious what RR actually thought of that role. Because did he actually have to act or do you do those things automatically as a castaway. At least he didn't have to study a lot of text. I don't even consider it a feature film. It is more of a documentary or an instructional film about how to survive at sea. It will probably also be based on a true story, but I've seen this movie now and a second time probably isn't necessary anymore. Now I know.

Pretty haunting film about a man who has to brave the dangers at sea. The amount of bad luck of the character is sometimes unintentionally laughable. Robert Redford does a good job. The film has a strong ending that can be interpreted in several ways.

3.5*
