Lilet Never Happened plot

12-year-old maladjusted Filipino street girl Lilet (Sandy Talag) struggles to survive on the streets of Manila, and threatens to slip into prostitution. Social worker Claire (Johanna ter Steege) desperately tries to save the girl, but her attempts fail time and again. Although Lilet gets plenty of opportunities to get out, in all her unruly, she chooses the hardest road. Because she is half Western and half Filipino, she eventually becomes the most popular prostitute in Manila among Western pedophiles.

I don't think this movie is realistic at all, and it was dramatic too.

Johanna ter Steege is always referred to as "the American" in the film, while with her emphatically Dutch accent she is clearly not. That may be possible in the theater, but it doesn't work in a feature film.

The blurbs put me on the wrong foot again. "This must see shakes up your view of the world" Marie Claire. "A phenomenal role by Sandy Talag, this film deserves a large audience", Tros Kompas. Well not my fave media. Personally, I found that Sandy Talag quite annoying, and the acting of the adults was quite mediocre.

As is often the case, an important message or a true story does not mean that the film is immediately good.

Tragic film about a child prostitute in Manila. In the bewildering story, dramatic and funny moments alternate at a rapid pace:
Lilet to her boyfriend Nonoy, who wants sex education from her:
Is that all? 60 cents? You only get a kiss for that.

Having become wiser through trial and error, Lilet learns at a very young age that adults cannot be trusted. Her wayward, optimistic and smart attitude to life is more than believably shaped by the little Sandy Talag. In addition, a nice role by Johanna ter Steege as the youth worker, who just can't get a grip on Lilet.

A clever, accessible film, in which, in addition to child prostitution, the natural urge to survive of a precocious girl is central. Strong direction by Jacco Groen (Meiden van de Keileweg), who cannot disguise the fact that he is actually a documentary maker.
An internationally acclaimed film, which has received a presidential award in the Philippines as the icing on the cake.

In itself a good story with a heavy subject. unfortunately the acting of the cast is not always very good. I also personally find the camera work a bit disappointing and the film sometimes looks a bit cheap. But despite that still worth a small enough.
