First and foremost, a film about friendship and helpfulness, especially among women, because Sautet's umpteenth collaboration with Romy Schneider has a strong feminist touch.
For the rest, a film about normal - and sometimes somewhat unusual - things in life, experiences, and opinions that are sometimes shared, but usually differ widely. Des histoires simples, so you might criticize the film for a lack of panache, but Sautet's strongest weapon remains Romy Schneider, at the age of forty and able to carry a full film on her own and someone you really can't get enough of.

Marie is played by Romy Schneider who is in excellent form. She carries the film, although she is not in the foreground the entire time. Sautet sometimes films her from a distance while other characters come to the fore. Sometimes he films her up close. A touching smile. A dejected look. A passionate plea. Depending on the fate that moves restlessly around her and brings small and large crises to life or reserves moments of happiness for her.
An emancipated woman with responsibilities. Child and work. Without the psychological and physical support of a man. Sautet makes a film that focuses on women and casts the male characters as second-rate figures. Seen in the light of the present, the film is perhaps somewhat reactionary. The women bear responsibility and have a duty of care. The men go where they want. Free from responsibilities and without a sense of duty. It was difficult for me to put myself in their place.
The film was written by Claude Sautet at the request of Romy Schneider who asked him to write a screenplay describing life from a woman's point of view. The emancipated Schneider was tired of films being all about the male vision. Une Histoire Simple is a beautiful film, but also a film that sharply portrays the contrasts between men and women. Interesting, beautiful, moving, but also a bit too simple for my taste.
