Nice film and strong acting by Quinn.

Story is nice and setting too.

But sometimes it is too busy and boring

Victor Hugo's fabulous book about Notre Dame has been filmed countless times. This version stays fairly faithful to the original storyline, including the dramatic ending. Despite that fact and despite the spectacular presence of Gina Lollobrigida, I find this film much less than the more romantic filming from 1939 with Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara, in which Hollywood takes the necessary liberties with respect to the original plot.

I have not yet seen the original version from 1939, but would follow the romantic concept more. The one from 1997 with Richard Harris and Salma Hayek does. Following the recent death of Gina Lollobrigida at the age of 95, I wanted to see this film. This movie legend used to be a real joy to watch. Beautiful, beautiful sensual actress of whom I have seen too few films. She has always stayed with me since childhood as the Queen of Sheba. What a look! This film stays close to the storyline of the book written by Victor Hugo. The introduction is nice in which it is made clear that the whole story is based on one word, namely fate. The dramatic ending fits it perfectly. Alain Cuny plays his role as Claude Frollo very well. You feel his complexes for the unrequited love for Esmeralda that culminate in dramatic dark consequences. Quasimodo played by Anthony Quinn is also on a roll, but the trump card is the presence of the sensual, playful Esmeralda played by the beautiful Gina Lollobrigida. 7/10
