Underworld

I am a fan of the Underworld franchise. This first film is nice and dark, has cool action scenes and of course the beautiful Kate Beckinsale who can fight a nice game. Not wrong. The common thread of the story is the battle between the vampires and the werewolves.

There is a whole history that is worked out in the following parts. Excellent acting also from Michael Sheen and Bil Nighy. Director Len Wiseman opts for a dark cinematography and there are also some beautiful sets. Especially at the end the tension increases and there are some great action scenes in it. Wonderful entertainment.

It's been a few years since I saw Underworld, at the time it made a great impression partly due to the presence of Beckinsale. Today it is a bit disappointing, but it is still entertaining.

Underworld doesn't really get off to a good start. The atmosphere looks fine, but the endless shooting in the metro is one of the motto; much shaving but little wool. The film seems to want to make too much of an impression in the beginning at a time when The Matrix did succeed with the same clatter of weapons. In addition, it is too much of a montage of short shots instead of beautiful long shots with an overview. For a moment I fear the worst, especially when the film continues with faded characters, and Underworld seems to be nothing more than Twilight for adults with the action elements of The Matrix, and the necessary bickering.

But then Underworld slowly manages to achieve its good IMDb rating with better moments of action, a fine plot with the necessary betrayals and acting performances from both Sheen and Nighy. And Beckinsale, although not particularly present in terms of acting and not counting the lame puppy love with Corvin, is always nice to see especially in such a tight latex suit. Add a great dark atmosphere/environment to that. The metal music does well against which the unsatisfactory Speedmann can be crossed out again. And so Underworld is a game of crossing things off against each other.

Bottom line, the film is a bit disappointing, but it's entertaining nonetheless.
