The film is based on the story “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” by Edgar A. Poe. Story and film tell of a series of brutal murders in Paris in the mid-19th century. A beautiful story and a nice film that shows a somewhat crude adaptation of the story. The film apotheosis, which remains very close to the story, is strangely not very exciting. Rather messy, wooden and a bit ridiculous. The rest of the film holds up just fine.
The setting in 19th century Paris is atmospheric. The camera work is absolutely good. It doesn't make scenes any more fun. The film uses saturated colors. Powerful, clear, beautiful. Pleasant to look at. The acting is also impressive. Responsible for this are people like Karl Malden, Claude Dauphin and the convincingly screaming kitchen maid Patricia Medina. However, the characters they color are too easy to read. I would have liked a little more psychological depth.
Phantom of the Rue Morgue is an atmospheric film that sometimes reminds me of a Hammer production. The film is not exciting. The mystery that needs to be unraveled is not sufficiently surrounded by suspense for that. Some poor shadow work here and there and that's it. Not enough to speak of a tension arc. The bar could have been a lot higher there.
The visual execution of the threat did not appear very threatening. Maybe a bit corny to say, but the mysterious killer is clearly a man in a monkey suit. Less clumsy than in other films with a man in a monkey suit, but still unmistakably a man in a monkey suit. Suspense and psychology simply work better.
