Bombastic fantasy film with a nice cast and a nice Gothic atmosphere. The only drawback is the somewhat messy scenario and the flat characters. Collins managed to convince.

Average.

Fairly mediocre.

It is certainly not a bad film, but one that is remarkably sloppy, while it does take quite some time with the duration of 130 minutes. Black knows how to play the cards, but doesn't seem to put much effort into it.

Collins is well chosen for the lead role. She always has a head for these kinds of roles and performs them very well. We also get a decent role from Sheehan, and a slightly too typical role from Campbell Bower. And a bad part from Headey.

Visually, the film looks decent. There is not really a goth atmosphere, which is a shame. Efforts have been made to create a separate world, but the details are still lacking. Now you do have a bunch of dull tattooed guys walking around but never really that fantasy atmosphere.

The effects are quite nice though. The werewolves still move a bit stiffly, but especially the demons look funny. Towards the final phase the film takes on a bombastic tone, and that is where all the effects are most beneficial.

But the movie is definitely too long. And even then, remarkably enough, it starts very sloppy. Characters come out of nowhere and are introduced as "persons who have stayed with me for life". So it's hard to get sympathy for someone when they come on the scene so hastily.

In addition, the film has very little intro. After about 5 minutes the action and fantasy starts to look around the corner and as a viewer you really have no idea what to do with the story. You see the characters 1x and hop, the worlds appear to be hiding even more than you would think.

The story itself isn't the most interesting thing there is either. The action is reasonably shot but the film lacks a bit of energy. The final phase is a bit better with a few nice finds and a lot of spectacle. Some points for that, but I'm not going to give enough for it just yet.

On her birthday, Clary [Lily Collins, daughter of singer Phil Collins] sees mysterious symbols and witnesses a bizarre murder in a nightclub. No one else appears to have seen that and it soon becomes clear why. Film adaptation of a book by Cassandra Clare with 'shadow hunters', a 'key master', witches 'gate keepers' and 'downworlders] so that it is barely possible to tie a rope. In the end, it's about some magical chalice that must stay out of the hands of Valentine [Jonathan Rhys Meyers]. A muddled take on Twilight with the same sexual undertones and significantly more action and violence. Nevertheless, this does not interest me and luckily there was no sequel.
