New York poet Elizabeth Bishop is looking for new inspiration. She travels to Rio de Janeiro to visit her old school friend Mary. The shy Elizabeth is quickly impressed by the sensual and flamboyant Brazil. Mary's girlfriend, architect Lota de Macedo Soares, falls head over heels for Elizabeth, but tries to maintain both relationships. However, the love triangle is put under pressure when Lota embarks on her biggest project to date: the Parque do Flamengo in Rio.
