Les Chevaux de Dieu plot

"No one is born a martyr."

10-year-old Yachine lives with his family in a slum area of Sidi Moumen in Casablanca. His mother Yemma supports the family as best she can. His father suffers from depression, one of his brothers is in the military, another is probably autistic and the third, 13-year-old Hamid, is the boss of the local neighborhood and Yachine's protector. When Hamid ends up in prison, Yachine takes any job he can find to escape the misery of violence and drugs. When Hamid is released, he has become an Islamic fundamentalist and tries to persuade Yachine and his friends to join. The spiritual leader, Imam Abou Zoubier, embarks on a lengthy physical and mental preparation, until the day they are chosen, to become martyrs. Inspired by the terrorist attacks of 15 May 2003 in Casablanca.

Still expected a bit more. The drama mainly highlights the breeding ground for suicide bombers: the poor young people who grew up in violence in the bidonvilles of Casablanca. The director spends a full hour explaining the living conditions of the young people, but then hardly takes time to reflect on the indoctrination. The conversion of the two brothers happens much too quickly, which causes some incredulity to arise. Nevertheless, I got the feeling that Ayouch hit the right note. I especially liked the first hour : I almost forgot that I was watching a movie because of the documentary style .. fantastic acting too. I found the second hour significantly less and the descent into fanaticism was not portrayed with the necessary care. Despite these minor substantive issues, this is still a film I would recommend seeing.

Good film about two brothers who grow up in the slums of Casablanca. An entertaining first half that resembles Cidade de Deus. The second half, however, takes a different tack, when the brothers join an Islamic group. Realistically portrayed, partly because of the use of the locations. The radicalization could have been better substantiated.
