England, 1857. Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes), the successful author, has been happily married to his wife Catherine Dickens (Joanna Scanlan) for many years. One day he meets the young Ellen Ternan (Felicity Jones), an ambitious actress who has landed a part in one of Dickens' plays. Not only is Charles impressed by Ellen's acting talents, but also by her gorgeous beauty. As time goes on, the two grow closer, while Catherine, unaware of her husband's cheating, begins to feel more and more distant.
