At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Newlyn school for artists flourished. The film focuses on the Lamorna group, which includes Alfred Munnings (Dominic Cooper), and Laura and Harold Knight. The incendiary anti-modernist Munnings, now regarded as one of Britain's most sought-after artists, finds himself in a complex love triangle with aspiring artist Florence Carter-Wood (Emily Browning) and Gilbert Evans (Dan Stevens), the steward in charge of the Lamorna Valley estate.
