Despite all the warnings beforehand, I had to try this film once. I shouldn't have done that. The fact that the bombing of Rotterdam in May 1940 is being used as the setting for a romantic drama is still appropriate, but that it is done on the basis of an excruciatingly bad screenplay with cringe-inducing dialogues is a disgrace.

I suspend my judgment about the acting talents of Jan Smit and Roos van Erkel for the time being. With this worthless material, neither of them got a real chance.

The Bombardment

If it weren't so sad, you could laugh heartily at The Bombardment. The script, the actors, the incredibly bad direction by Ate de Jong and the terrible voice-over, it is a completely missed production and a low point in Dutch cinema. The fact that Jan Smit is not the worst point of the film (far from it) says it all. Hopefully one day there will be a film that does justice to the bombing of Rotterdam.

If you approach this film like a slapstick, there is so much to laugh about that you could say that the bombing was a success. Jan Smit from Volendam, how do you come up with it...? And that voice-over by Mr. Aart from Sesame Street...Hahaha!
