Axel is a normal, somewhat naive young man who flees his parental home after the death of his idealized brother and seeks refuge in the army. This ends with a disillusionment. After desertion, thanks to the help of some mafiosi - under a false name - he finds work at a railway yard in the New York harbor. His foreman Charley can easily get a little extra, because in exchange for this favor he demands a part of Axel's wages as hush money. A colleague of Charley, Tommy, sees this with sorrow. He offers Axel a job on his team. An old argument between Charley and Tommy flares up again.
