Tabu plot

"Aurora had a farm in Africa, at the foot of Mount Tabu…"

The elderly Portuguese lady Aurora and her Cape Verdean domestic worker live next door to Pilar, whose aim in life is to do good. Not that she gets any credit for her efforts. And certainly not from the suspicious Aurora, who prefers to spend her little savings in the casino in Estoril in the remaining years. When old Aurora dies, Pilar discovers a mysterious letter that leads her on the trail of an old lover of Aurora.

Is one of those movies that starts with the ending...and then leaves the action to a narrator.

Actors can thus hardly be judged in a story that brings no more than some classic passion and romance in Africa, perhaps from the late 1950s when colonists gradually felt threatened by the indigenous population. Film vaguely lifts some veils in this regard.

Cinematographically, the film may have something special. In its entirety, however, it is not that convincing, let alone compelling

What a wonderful movie this is. Tabu's style is reminiscent of the Nouvelle Vague of the 1960s, with the soft black and white, the 4:3 frame, the playing with sound, the voice-over. Especially Godard and in particular Pierrot le Fou seem to me to be sources of inspiration (think of the dance-like scene in the wilderness, where you almost think you see Belmondo and Karina). I loved the smooth camera work, which has a certain individuality about it without forcing it. Equally wonderful is the music, which is performed within the film story and is full of Portuguese melancholy. The way the story is told reinforces the tragedy, although I must say that especially the second part of the film managed to grab me. The fact that a number of details (for example, the accusation of witchcraft that Aurora makes about her servant) only fall into place retrospectively is a nice side effect. Finally, the setting of colonial Africa is perfect and an almost surreal edge is regularly created. In short, Tabu is a beautiful film that combines lightness and heaviness. Incredibly underrated here.

No, I didn't like this at all. I sometimes say that I like both action and art house, but this really Art house with the capital A and I like that less. Or not at all. Silences for the sake of silences, to make things interesting for my feeling. Too made. Also with occasional voices that disappear, that takes me out of a film (Godard often had a hand in it too). This is such a movie. The first part in particular really didn't captivate me at all. Cold, not interesting. And that's where the movie goes wrong. The second part is a bit better, looks pretty good with that fine narrative voice constantly in the background and a bit more atmosphere from the images, but I missed any emotional impact here, partly because of that boring first part.

Visually nice with occasional beautiful black and white. Still, more could have been done with it. If you're going to play with different times, why not one black and white and the other color? It is not necessary but would have added value. 1.5*.
