Very bland.

Like most Bruce Lee movies, really. I can understand why he has become so legendary, his presence and style are very special and can hardly be imitated, but the films he got involved in are rare of any level. This one is also very cheap.

Strange, because around that time the Shaw Bros were already a bit further. Although Lee may not fit very well in their films, the result is unfortunately that everything around Lee falls short. Especially the choreographies of the fights. Lee himself also waits a long time to fight, but even he doesn't know how to make much of it. Boring action scenes, disastrous for a film like this.

Especially since there is really nothing else to do. Bad acting, visually quite broken and a story that was probably written at 5 minutes. It's all bittersweet, but that's the fate of a martial arts film with disappointing fights.

1.5*

Mediocre film about a man who comes to the countryside to work in an ice cream factory where his cousins also work. A thin story that doesn't really captivate. Sometimes a bit unbalanced in tone and a bit too many boring moments. Moreover, the fight scenes are quite sparse. In that respect, the last part is the best in which Bruce Lee shows what he can do.

The Big Boss is the first collaboration between action figure Bruce Lee and production company Golden Harvest Company. Two more films would follow: Fist Of Fury and The Way Of The Dragon. Thanks to these films, Bruce Lee became a worldwide phenomenon and remains the most successful and best-known Asian action star of all time.

However, this first film is not his best. With a budget of $100,000, the film is on the cheap side and unfortunately it shows. The sets are poor, the camera work is very mediocre and the editing is messy. Fortunately, the action is fine and Lee can show his fighting skills here. And they immediately form the climax of an otherwise fairly mediocre action film. The story doesn't matter and the acting is also substandard.

However, thanks to Bruce Lee's popularity, the film became a box-office success and became the highest-grossing film ever in Hong Kong at the time.
