Allez, Eddy! plot
The story of 'Allez Eddy' takes place in 1975, the era that every boy wanted to be Eddy Merckx. Also Freddy, the eleven-year-old cycling talent and son of butcher André. André has other concerns, however, because the first supermarket will soon open its doors in the village, a case that threatens the butcher's shop. But Freddy thinks otherwise, because the supermarket is organizing a cycling race on the occasion of the opening. The winner of that competition may meet Eddy Merckx. Freddy secretly registers...

I understand the comparison with Wes Anderson (the images, the colors, the playfulness). Still, I thought it was a bit too sweet, too much "average youth film" to really appreciate the film. Nevertheless a pleasant viewing experience with beautiful images.

Quite pleasant and entertaining film of their own making. Not a film that you absolutely must see or that I would recommend, but a nice addition to the passing. The story is quite nice, with Eddy Merckx's performance in the Tour de France nicely processed. In addition, Embrechts also incorporated other themes such as the Flemish Movement, globalization, liberal free thinking from the 1960s, the traditional Flemish committed mentality of father André, etc.
What I found less successful, however, were the references to the three other "gifted" children who were ostracized and bullied after their "defect" became public. Thus the wise advice of mother the woman to lock up Freddy in his attic room. Rather simplistic and succinct (from both the mother and the film as a whole).
Obviously this is a feel good fill with a happy ending. Simple story, well presented, but not more than that. You should not go to Cannes or Berlin with it, but that was probably not the intention. Although I'm not a big fan of Peter Van den Begin, he is a more than decent actor. Once again he performs his role as butcher/father well and convincingly. Barbara Sarafian is the real star: very natural and with great ease!

Quite pleasant.
There is a slight hint of Jeunet about this film. Made everything just a little more beautiful that it is in reality, a hint of melancholy, a tiny bit surreal (that supermarket/the design/the location), the mix of classic vs modern. It is not an ode to Jeunet, but you can look a little bit in that direction.
Acting is solid, although it is not always natural. Normally I can't stand Van den Begin very well, but his body language speaks volumes here. Sarafian is as always good, only the children I found a little bit uncomfortable.
The ending isn't too original, but in the end it's mainly the atmosphere that makes this film worthwhile. Furthermore, it just fits with this movie, a bad ending just wouldn't be so appropriate. Nice video, that's for sure. Not a great masterpiece, but a very tasty snack.
