A very good SB with unusual elements. A hybrid of Western and martial arts.
A brutal gang of criminals terrorizes a peaceful village and hides there with a stolen bank vault. It's a matter of cowardice versus courage in such a situation. While the mayor is a cringing coward, some younger members decide to stand up to the terror. Courage gives strength, courage makes heroes. These are time-tested values in Shaw Bros. films.
Even so, the "savage five" aren't professionals; they only have their courage and youthful strength to offer resistance, which I found truly remarkable in this film. It's not about strong, stronger, strongest. They're also forced to use ruses, which results in some exciting scenes. And as Metalfist already mentioned, the heroes don't all make it out alive, and that makes for an ending that's surreal, to say the least, a bit against the conventions of the genre. But that's also what makes it such a unique film. I found the buildup a bit draggy, which is why I missed out on a 4* rating, but the second half was quite tense.
