Not very inspired sequel to the not very good first film. Yet they could do a lot worse in this genre. Overall quite atmospheric.

2.5*

A project that Craven only made because he needed money. After all, A Nightmare on Elm Street had not yet been made and the producers of the original Hills Have Eyes were looking forward to a sequel.

Partly because of this, The Hills Have Eyes Part II has become a rather meaningless sequel. The original is seen as a great classic, although personally I never really saw the charm of that film. As far as I'm concerned, The Hills Have Eyes Part II isn't even that much worse than its predecessor. Atmosphere and tension building are okay (Harry Manfredini sometimes makes it sound very Friday the 13th) and the teenagers are not that annoying. The kills, on the other hand, are very tame and the film flows, despite the relatively short running time.

By the way, The Hills Have Eyes Part II is best known to many as the film in which even Beast the dog has a flashback. And let's be honest; It's of course a cheap way to fill your sequel with scenes from the original. Anyway, the rest of the film is not that innovative: once again people (this time teenagers instead of a family) have car trouble and in a desert full of booby traps (a well-known fetish of Craven) come face to face with a few mutants, including Michael Berryman. The Hills Have Eyes Part II can actually best be summarized as "meh". It's not special, but they are indeed much worse.

2.5 stars.

A worthless sequel to an equally worthless original. The absolute silliness in content in particular ensures that The Hills Have Eyes Part II never fails to appeal. An example is indeed the redundant use of flashbacks (even one for the dog) and the continued bare dressing of the cannibals. It all makes no sense anymore and even the shock effect of the first part is completely lost here. You really have to look past all kinds of elements (acting, cinematography, decoration) to be able to enjoy this at all, or to be able to sit through it at all. Only Michael Berryman makes a special appearance and of course the face of the series, but that already covers most of the positive points. It's nice that director Wes Craven managed to deliver significantly better films after this.
