The Ambassador plot
"To Break The Story, He Must Become The Story"
"The conversation we're about to have never happened," a diplomatic passport dealer said in The Ambassador's opening sequence. The statement applies to a substantial part of the film, which was shot with the hidden camera, and at the same time determines its value: The Ambassador shows the back of Africa, an underworld that cannot be captured in any other way. Dressed as a neo-colonial, director Mads Brügger sets off for the Central African Republic to become ambassador on behalf of Liberia. He sets up a match factory, run by Pygmies, to cover up his ambitions in the diamond trade. But in fact Brügger is all about showing how power in the country is distributed and traded. His mission is certainly not without danger, for example, when the head of the security service, an ex-Foreign Legionnaire, is murdered some time after their meeting.
